In her lecture delivered at al-Furqān’s headquarters in Wimbledon, Professor Schimmel took her audience by the hand, introducing it to the importance of place in the poetry of Islam, travelling through the centuries and across continents to present a masterful overview of her subject. Whether the poet’s subject was his religion or an unrequited love, or his people’s past glories, his themes were often imbued by a sense of place and unity with his fellow believers in the wide Muslim world.
