It is now becoming evident that the skills involved in the cataloguing of manuscripts are gradually disappearing. Traditionally, these skills were passed down from Master to Pupil in the course of an apprenticeship, which is becoming increasingly rare.
The sixed training course took place during 7 - 25 November 2008 in Aleppo, Syria. Thirty-six participants from Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq completed the caurse which was hosted by the al-Waqfiyah Library.
This fifth cataloguing training Course was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in collaboration with the International Islamic University. Three weeks of comprehensive study (27 March - 14 April 2006) covered all aspects of manuscript cataloguing and handling.
The fourth training course for the cataloguing of Islamic manuscripts was held during the period from 18 June to 18 July 2001. The course was organized by Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation in co-operation with the National Library of books and documents in Rabat, Morocco.
The two theoretical weeks of the course were conducted at Eagle House, and the three weeks of practical cataloguing work in the Library at SOAS, where the MSS collection of the School of Oriental and African Studies was placed at the disposal of the course members.
The course organised in Cairo, Egypt, and was inaugurated on 3rd January 1994 by the Chairman, Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani, and the President of Cairo University, Professor Mufid Shihab.
