شارك:

Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften (Corpus Coranicum), and Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation (London) are delighted to call for applications for another international training course/workshop in the series:

Scriptorium: Workshops on the study of Oriental manuscripts

This training course/workshop will be organised under the title:

"Material Aspects of Manuscripts of the Islamicate World, with a Special Focus on Bookbinding"

Taking into consideration the vast number of the Islamic manuscripts that are spread in different parts of the world, many of which still remain unstudied; and, taking into consideration the significant rise in interest for researching and publishing this heritage, a training course focusing on different material aspects of manuscripts of the Islamicate world, including the book-binding, can be seen as desideratum.

Furthermore, taking into consideration the fact that the world of manuscripts is very dynamic, and that every day there are new findings on different aspects of manuscripts; this training course will serve as a tool to refresh this accumulated knowledge, shed light on the new findings, and call for further studies and research on aspects that haven’t been tackled so far.

The workshop will cover the following topics: Islamic bookbinding and its techniques, function and ornamentation; Papers of the Islamic world; Re-use of manuscripts in bindings; Material analysis of Islamic manuscripts; Conservational practices, etc.

Many lectures will be supplemented by hands-on sessions, in which the participants have the opportunity to observe the discussed features themselves in manuscripts of the Islamicate world from the Berlin collection.

The workshop is planned as an advanced training course.
