The book al-Mawā'iz wa-l-I'tibār fī Dhikr al-Khitat wa-l-Athār, written by the greatest authority on the history of Islamic Egypt. Maqrīzī Taqī al-Dīn Ahmad ibn 'Alī ibn 'Abd al-Qādir (d. 745 AH/1442 CE), is considered one of the Arab heritage's pride and joy, and the most important source of Islamic Egypt’s history. This is a reference work that researchers on the history and archaeology of Islamic Egypt cannot dispense with. In this work, al-Maqrizi preserved for us - apart from his personal comments - important scripts belonging to authors from long ago, whose works have been lost. Al-Maqrīzī’s work al-Khitat is considered the most ground-breaking work ever realised in the history of cities and urban life in general, since there exists no older book in this field.The book History of Florence, the first to be written on the history of cities in Europe, was published in 1840, that is to say, some 400 years after the passing of al-Maqrīzī. Al-Furqan recently published the new edition of this book - an edition that has been augmented, properly edited and proof-read. It is an edition that includes additional sources, studies that came out after the publication of the first edition and recent geographical photographs of the monuments mentioned by Al-Maqrīzī, which were sometimes compared with paintings produced at the beginning of the 19th century. What distinguishes this new edition is the incorporation of new hand-written copies of the book: the original copy of the third volume, located at the University of Michigan, USA, and the oldest copies of the first volume found in the Fayzullah Library in Istanbul.
