Summary
This study brings to light the poetic abilities of Makkans and what characterised their nature and aesthetic appreciation. The study looked at the position of Makkah on the poetic literary landscape in general and in romantic poetry (ghazal) in particular. The author researches the types of ghazal, such as politically malicious and conniving ghazal, superficial and dishonest ghazal, praise, reward and exaltation ghazal, the ghazal of the jurists, honourable ghazal and civil ghazal.
The book ends with a literature review of ghazal in the poetry of the Makkans from the pre-Islamic period (Jāhiliyah) up to the Umayyad period.
