In 1989 the Foundation set up a research project to investigate as comprehensively as possible the collections of Islamic manuscripts existing world-wide. Scholars were identified and commissioned to carry out the survey in 106 countries. The project was completed in 1994, with the publication of the 4th volume of The World Survey of Islamic Manuscripts, which is the most wide-ranging survey to date, both in terms of countries surveyed and languages covered.
