In her lecture delivered at Al-Furqan headquarters in Wimbledon, on Tuesday 15th of February 2000, Professor Schimmel captured the audience’s attention, introducing it to the importance of space in the poetry of Islam, travelling through the centuries and across continents to present a masterful overview of her subject. Whether the poet’s subject was his religion or an unrequited love, or his people’s past glories, his themes were often imbued by a sense of space and unity with his fellow believers in the wide Muslim world.
