Summary
This book is considered to be the first academic documentation of the ribāṭ (ribāṭ, plural for rabṭ, a military-civilian concept of townships on permanent combat readiness) in Makkah during the Ottoman period of 923-1334 A.H. It exhibits 157 ribāṭ, of them 35 were turned into a waqf during that period.
The book is characterised by its academic documentation and use of very old sources and manuscripts specific to that period, detailing their operational structures, conditions and types, in addition to statistical analysis of information gathered on those ribāṭ. The author lists a number of important findings as well as suggestions for further studies, in addition to a large appendix that is full of photographs and historical texts.
